How to Make Homemade Subs (Step-by-Step)

 Step 1: Prep Your Ingredients

  1. Wash and dry veggies (lettuce, tomatoes, onions). Slice thinly.

  2. Lay out all meats and cheeses in stacks for easy assembly.

  3. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) if you plan to toast your subs.

Step 2: Prepare the Sub Rolls

  1. Slice the rolls horizontally, but don’t cut all the way through (hinge style).

  2. If desired, brush the insides lightly with olive oil, butter, or mayo.

  3. Place on a baking sheet if toasting.

Step 3: Layer Like a Pro

Classic Italian Layering Order:

  1. Spread sauce (mayo, mustard, aioli) on bottom of roll

  2. Add cheese slices

  3. Layer meats (start with larger slices like ham, then salami, capicola, etc.)

  4. Add more cheese if desired

  5. Toast in oven for 5–7 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bread is lightly crisp

  6. Remove and top with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and final drizzle of oil/vinegar or dressing

Toast with meat and cheese only, then add cold toppings after for the best texture!

 Step 4: Finish & Serve

  • Add final seasonings (salt, pepper, red pepper flakes, oregano)

  • Close the sandwich, press lightly, and cut in half for serving

  • Serve with chips, a pickle spear, or a side salad
