Korean beef

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef (or thinly sliced beef, like ribeye or sirloin)
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (or honey)
  • 1 tablespoon gochujang (Korean red chili paste) or 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • Cooked white or brown rice (for serving)
  • Optional: steamed vegetables like broccoli or carrots

Instructions:

Step 1: Cook the Beef

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of sesame oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the ground beef (or thinly sliced beef) to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon or spatula. Cook until browned and fully cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.

Step 2: Add Garlic and Sauce

  1. Push the beef to one side of the skillet and add the remaining sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together soy sauce, brown sugar (or honey), gochujang (if using), and rice vinegar. Pour the sauce into the skillet, stirring to combine it with the beef and garlic mixture.

Step 3: Simmer

  1. Let the beef simmer in the sauce for 3-5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together and the sauce to slightly thicken.

Step 4: Garnish and Serve

  1. Remove the skillet from the heat. Garnish the beef with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.
  2. Serve the Korean beef over a bed of steamed rice with optional steamed vegetables on the side.

Tips:

  • Gochujang: This chili paste adds a nice spicy and tangy kick to the dish. If you don’t have it, you can substitute with red pepper flakes or leave it out for a milder flavor.
  • Beef Cuts: If using thinly sliced beef, make sure to sear it quickly to avoid overcooking. Thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin works well.
  • Vegetables: You can add vegetables like carrots, bell peppers, or broccoli to the skillet for extra texture and nutrition.
