Craving comfort food but don’t want to fire up the oven or stand over a stove? Say hello to Air Fryer Macaroni and Cheese—a creamy, cheesy classic made easy with your air fryer. This method gives you tender pasta, gooey cheese, and a crispy golden top without heating up your whole kitchen.

Perfect as a side dish, main course, or indulgent snack, this air fryer mac & cheese is quicker than traditional baked versions and packed with rich flavor in every bite.

Why Make Mac & Cheese in an Air Fryer?

  • No need to preheat the oven

  • Crispy top layer without broiling

  • Saves energy and time

  • Great for small-batch cooking

  • Easily customizable with mix-ins and cheeses

Ingredients

For the Mac & Cheese Base:

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  • 1 cup milk (whole milk preferred)

  • 1 cup heavy cream (or substitute more milk for a lighter version)

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (sharp or medium)

  • ½ cup mozzarella or Monterey Jack (optional, for extra meltiness)

  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ¼ teaspoon paprika

  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Topping:

  • ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs or crushed Ritz crackers

  • 1 tablespoon melted butter

  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Equipment Needed

  • Air fryer (basket or oven-style)

  • Heat-safe baking dish (that fits in your air fryer)

  • Medium saucepan (to cook pasta)

  • Mixing bowl

  • Spoon or spatula

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Pasta

Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook the elbow macaroni until al dente (1–2 minutes less than package directions). Drain and set aside.

Tip: Don’t overcook the pasta—it will finish cooking in the air fryer.

Step 2: Make the Cheese Sauce Base

In a large bowl, mix:

  • Cooked macaroni

  • Butter (let it melt from the hot pasta)

  • Milk and cream

  • Shredded cheddar and optional mozzarella

  • Garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper

Stir until the cheese begins to melt and everything is evenly coated.

Step 3: Prepare for the Air Fryer

Spray or butter a baking dish that fits inside your air fryer. Pour the mac & cheese mixture into the dish and smooth the top.

In a small bowl, combine breadcrumbs, melted butter, and Parmesan. Sprinkle evenly over the top.

Step 4: Air Fry to Perfection

Place the dish in the air fryer basket or tray.

  • Temperature: 350°F (175°C)

  • Time: 15–20 minutes

  • Check at: 10 minutes to see if the top is browning. Cover loosely with foil if it browns too quickly.

You’re looking for:

  • Hot, bubbly cheese

  • Pasta fully cooked

  • Crispy, golden topping

Step 5: Cool & Serve

Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving. This helps the cheese sauce thicken slightly and gives the dish structure.
