Air Fryer Blooming Onion

Title: Air Fryer Blooming Onion

Ingredients:

For the Blooming Onion:

  • 1 large sweet onion
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For Dipping Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon horseradish sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare Onion:
    • Cut off the top (stem end) of the onion and peel it. Place the flat side down and make vertical cuts, leaving about 1/2 inch uncut at the base. Repeat to create evenly spaced cuts.
  2. Soak Onion:
    • Soak the cut onion in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes, allowing the buttermilk to get into the layers.
  3. Prepare Dipping Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish sauce, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Adjust the seasoning to taste. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
  4. Preheat Air Fryer:
    • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Prepare Coating:
    • In a shallow dish, combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Coat Onion:
    • Remove the onion from the buttermilk, letting any excess drip off. Dredge the onion in the flour mixture, making sure to get the coating into the cuts.
  7. Air Fry:
    • Place the coated onion in the air fryer basket. Mist or brush it with a little oil. Air fry for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Serve:
    • Remove the blooming onion from the air fryer, place it on a serving plate, and serve hot with the prepared dipping sauce.

Time and Intensity:

  • Preparation Time: 45 minutes (including soaking time)
  • Cooking Time: 15-20 minutes
  • Total Time: Approximately 1 hour
  • Intensity: Moderate

Note: This Air Fryer Blooming Onion recipe provides a crispy and flavorful appetizer with fewer calories than traditional deep-fried versions. The onion opens up beautifully in the air fryer, and the accompanying dipping sauce adds a zesty kick. Serve it at parties or as a fun snack for a delightful and healthier alternative.
