Air fryer crispy fried onions

Ingredients:

  • 2 large onions (yellow or white), thinly sliced into rings
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional for extra flavor)
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk)
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or gluten-free breadcrumbs)
  • Cooking spray or a little oil (to help crisp)

Instructions:

Step 1: Prep the Onions

  1. Thinly slice the onions into rings or strips, depending on your preference. Separate the rings so they don’t stick together.

Step 2: Soak the Onions

  1. Place the onion rings in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Let them soak for 10-15 minutes. This will help tenderize the onions and make the coating stick better.

Step 3: Set Up a Breading Station

  1. In one bowl, mix the flour, salt, pepper, and paprika (if using).
  2. In another bowl, add the panko breadcrumbs.

Step 4: Bread the Onions

  1. Remove the onion rings from the buttermilk and shake off any excess.
  2. Dredge the onion rings in the flour mixture, ensuring they are well-coated.
  3. Then dip them back into the buttermilk before coating them in the panko breadcrumbs. Press the breadcrumbs lightly to ensure they stick.

Step 5: Preheat the Air Fryer

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes.

Step 6: Air Fry the Onions

  1. Place the breaded onion rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. You may need to cook them in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  2. Spray the onion rings lightly with cooking spray or drizzle a little oil over them to help them crisp.
  3. Air fry for 8-10 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking. Fry until they are golden brown and crispy.

Step 7: Serve

  1. Once done, remove the crispy fried onions from the air fryer and serve them immediately as a snack or topping.
