  • Marinate Time: 30 minutes (optional)

  • Cook Time: 45–50 minutes

  • Total Time: 55–60 minutes (1½ hours with marinating)

  • Servings: 4 (2 drumsticks per serving)

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Flavor Profile: Sweet, smoky, tangy, sticky

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 8 chicken drumsticks (about 2–2.5 lbs / 1 kg)

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

Honey BBQ Sauce

  • ¾ cup BBQ sauce (use your favorite brand or homemade)

  • ¼ cup honey

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

  • ½ teaspoon hot sauce (optional, for a kick)

Optional Garnishes

  • Fresh parsley, chopped

  • Sesame seeds

  • Green onions, finely sliced

Equipment Needed

  • Large bowl or zip-top bag (for marinating)

  • Baking sheet

  • Aluminum foil or parchment paper

  • Basting brush

  • Wire rack (optional, for extra crispiness)

  • Tongs or spatula

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Chicken

Pat the drumsticks dry with paper towels. This helps the skin crisp up in the oven.

Place them in a large bowl or zip-top bag. Drizzle with olive oil, then season with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Toss until evenly coated.

Optional: Let marinate in the fridge for 30 minutes to an hour for deeper flavor.

Step 2: Bake the Drumsticks

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper for easy cleanup. For best results, place a wire rack on the baking sheet and arrange the drumsticks on top. This allows heat to circulate and helps with even browning.

Bake for 35–40 minutes, flipping the drumsticks halfway through cooking. The skin should be golden and the internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C).

Step 3: Make the Honey BBQ Sauce

While the chicken is baking, combine the BBQ sauce, honey, soy sauce, vinegar, and hot sauce in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until smooth and bring to a simmer. Let it cook for 4–5 minutes until slightly thickened, then remove from heat.

Step 4: Glaze and Broil

Once the chicken is mostly cooked, remove it from the oven. Brush each drumstick generously with the honey BBQ sauce.

Return the chicken to the oven and broil on high for 3–5 minutes, or until the glaze is bubbly, sticky, and slightly charred. Keep a close eye to prevent burning!

For extra sauciness, brush with more sauce right before serving.

Step 5: Garnish and Serve

Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, chopped parsley, or green onions if desired.

Serve with classic sides like:

  • Mashed potatoes

  • Coleslaw

  • Mac and cheese

  • Grilled corn

  • Rice or cornbread

Tips for Success

  • Dry the drumsticks well before seasoning for the best oven-baked crisp.

  • Use a wire rack to elevate the chicken for even cooking.

  • Double the sauce if you like extra glaze for dipping or drizzling.

  • Don’t skip the broil! It caramelizes the sugars in the honey and BBQ sauce for that sticky, finger-licking finish.

Flavor Variations

  • Spicy Kick: Add more hot sauce or a dash of cayenne to the glaze.

  • Asian Twist: Swap BBQ sauce for hoisin sauce and add grated ginger.

  • Smoky BBQ: Use smoked paprika and add a splash of liquid smoke to the sauce.
