These Blueberry Cinnamon Buns are soft, fluffy, and packed with warm cinnamon sugar and fresh berries in every swirl. Topped with vibrant blueberry frosting, they’re as beautiful as they are delicious!

 Ingredients

 For the Dough:

  • 3 1/4 cups (400g) all-purpose flour, plus extra for kneading

  • 2 1/4 tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk (about 110°F / 43°C)

  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, melted

  • 1/2 tsp salt

 For the Blueberry Cinnamon Filling:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick / 115g) unsalted butter, softened

  • 2/3 cup (130g) light brown sugar

  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

  • 2 tsp cornstarch (optional, helps thicken berry juices)

For the Blueberry Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 4 oz (115g) cream cheese, softened

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar

  • 1/4 cup blueberry puree (see note below)

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • Pinch of salt

To make blueberry puree: Blend 1/3 cup blueberries with 1 tsp lemon juice and strain out the skins for a smooth consistency.

 Instructions

 Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.

 Step 2: Make the Dough

In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine:

  • Yeast mixture

  • Melted butter

  • Egg

  • Salt

  • Flour (add gradually)

Knead for 6–8 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. If it’s sticky, add a bit more flour, 1 tbsp at a time.

Form into a ball and place in a greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

 Step 3: Prepare the Filling

In a small bowl, mix:

  • Softened butter

  • Brown sugar

  • Cinnamon

Set aside.

If using fresh blueberries, wash and pat them dry. If using frozen, do not thaw to prevent excess juice during baking. Toss them lightly with cornstarch if desired.

 Step 4: Roll and Fill

On a floured surface, roll the dough into a 16×12 inch rectangle.

Spread the cinnamon-sugar butter mixture evenly across the dough. Sprinkle blueberries evenly on top.

Roll the dough up tightly from the long edge, pinching the seam to seal.

 Step 5: Slice the Rolls

Cut into 12 equal pieces using dental floss or a sharp knife.

Place rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, swirl side up. Leave some space between them to allow for rising.

 Step 6: Second Rise

Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes, until puffy.

Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

 Step 7: Bake

Bake for 25–30 minutes, until golden brown and the centers are fully baked.

Allow the rolls to cool slightly while you prepare the frosting.

Step 8: Make the Blueberry Cream Cheese Frosting

In a medium bowl, beat:

  • Cream cheese

  • Butter

  • Powdered sugar

  • Vanilla

  • Salt

Add blueberry puree one tablespoon at a time until your desired color and consistency is reached.

Beat until smooth and creamy.

 Step 9: Frost and Serve

Spread or drizzle the blueberry cream cheese frosting generously over slightly warm buns.

Top with a few fresh blueberries or a sprinkle of lemon zest (optional) for garnish.

Serve warm and enjoy every gooey, berry-filled bite!

 Storage & Reheating

  • Fridge: Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days

  • Reheat: Microwave individual buns for 15–20 seconds or warm in a 300°F oven for 10 minutes

  • Freeze: Freeze unfrosted buns for up to 2 months. Thaw and frost after reheating
