Ingredients

Bread Pudding:

  • 6 cups (about 1 loaf) day-old bread, cubed (French, brioche, or challah works well)
  • 3 cups whole milk or half-and-half
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup raisins (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Optional Toppings:

  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Bread

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or casserole dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  3. Place the bread cubes evenly in the dish. Add raisins if using, distributing them throughout the bread.

Step 2: Make the Custard

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  2. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to ensure all pieces are soaked.

Step 3: Soak the Bread

  1. Let the bread soak in the custard for about 30 minutes. This helps create a soft, creamy texture.
  2. Before baking, drizzle the melted butter over the top.

Step 4: Bake

  1. Bake the bread pudding in the preheated oven for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set (a knife inserted in the center should come out clean).
  2. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Serving Suggestions

  • Dust with powdered sugar for a touch of sweetness.
  • Serve warm with a drizzle of caramel sauce or a dollop of whipped cream.
  • Pair with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent treat.
