 Introduction

Whether you’re looking for a crowd-pleasing appetizer, a fun after-school snack, or a bite-sized option for game day, Ham and Cheese Sticks are the ultimate go-to.

They’re warm, cheesy, and crispy on the outside, while the inside is filled with gooey melted cheese and savory ham. Think of them like mozzarella sticks but upgraded with deli-style flavor and a flaky crust. Best of all, they only take a few ingredients and come together in under 30 minutes!

Kids love them. Adults love them. And you’ll love how easy they are to make.

 Ingredients

Here’s everything you need to make these crispy ham and cheese snacks:

For the Sticks:

  • 6 flour tortillas (or use crescent dough, egg roll wrappers, or sandwich bread)

  • 6 slices of deli ham (thin or medium sliced)

  • 6 cheese sticks (mozzarella or cheddar) OR 6 slices of cheese folded into sticks

  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash – optional)

  • 1 tbsp milk (to mix with egg wash, optional)

  • Cooking oil or spray (for pan-frying or baking)

Optional for Frying (Coated Version):

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko or seasoned)

You can also add mustard, cream cheese, or a thin spread of mayo inside for extra flavor.

 Equipment Needed

  • Cutting board

  • Frying pan or baking tray

  • Knife

  • Small bowl for egg wash

  • Tongs or spatula

  • Paper towels (for draining, if frying)

How to Make Ham and Cheese Sticks

Step 1: Prep Your Ingredients

Lay out your tortillas or bread slices. If using bread, trim off crusts and flatten them slightly with a rolling pin.

Cut each cheese stick in half (or fold sliced cheese into strips about the same size). Slice ham if needed to fit your wrap size.

Step 2: Assemble the Sticks

On each tortilla (or bread slice):

  1. Place one slice of ham flat in the center.

  2. Add a piece of cheese on top of the ham.

  3. Roll tightly into a log or cigar shape. Seal the edge with a little beaten egg or water to help it stay closed.

TIP: If you’re using crescent roll dough or egg roll wrappers, simply fold over the ends and roll tightly like a burrito.

Step 3: Choose Your Cooking Method

You’ve got options based on what texture you’re after and what tools you have!

Option 1: Pan-Fried (Crispy Outside)

  1. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a skillet over medium heat.

  2. Place the sticks seam-side down and cook for 2–3 minutes per side until golden and crispy.

  3. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Option 2: Oven-Baked (Lighter Option)

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Place the sticks seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking tray.

  3. Brush lightly with oil or egg wash.

  4. Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until golden and cheese is melted.

Option 3: Deep-Fried (Extra Crunchy – Breaded Version)

  1. Dip each rolled stick into flour, then beaten egg, then breadcrumbs.

  2. Heat oil in a deep fryer or pan to 350°F (175°C).

  3. Fry for about 3–4 minutes or until golden brown.

  4. Drain on paper towels.

Option 4: Air Fryer (Crispy & Healthier)

  1. Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Lightly spray sticks with oil.

  3. Cook for 6–8 minutes, flipping halfway through.

 Serving Suggestions

Ham and cheese sticks are best served hot and gooey. Try pairing with:

  • Honey mustard sauce

  • Ranch dressing

  • Marinara or pizza sauce

  • Chipotle mayo

  • Hot sauce or sriracha for heat

They’re also great on a party platter with fresh veggies, sliders, and fruit skewers!

 Storage & Reheating

To Store:

  • Let sticks cool completely, then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

To Reheat:

  • Reheat in the air fryer or oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5–6 minutes.

  • Avoid microwaving if possible — it can make the crust soggy and rubbery.

To Freeze:

  • Freeze uncooked or cooked sticks for up to 1 month. Reheat from frozen in an oven or air fryer.
