Homemade cough syrup

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium onion (yellow or red works best)
  • 1/2 to 1 cup raw honey (preferably local, for additional benefits)
  • 1 lemon (optional, for extra vitamin C and flavor)
  • 1 jar with a lid

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the Onion

  1. Peel the onion and slice it into thin rings or chunks.

Step 2: Layer the Onion and Honey

  1. In a clean jar, place a layer of onion slices, then pour a spoonful or two of honey over the top.
  2. Continue layering the onion and honey until you’ve used all the onion and the jar is nearly full. Make sure each layer of onion is well-covered with honey.

Step 3: Let it Sit

  1. Cover the jar with the lid and let it sit at room temperature for 4-6 hours or overnight. The onion will release its juices, creating a syrupy liquid with the honey.

Step 4: Strain (Optional)

  1. After the syrup has formed, you can either leave the onion in the jar or strain it out if you prefer a smoother syrup. The mixture will turn into a sweet, slightly spicy liquid.

Step 5: Add Lemon (Optional)

  1. If using, squeeze the juice of one lemon into the syrup for added flavor and vitamin C, which can boost the immune system.

Step 6: Store the Syrup

  1. Store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to a week. Use a clean spoon each time you take a dose to prevent contamination.

How to Use:

  • Take 1 tablespoon every few hours as needed to soothe a cough or sore throat.
  • For children over 1 year old, give 1 teaspoon (Note: Do not give honey to children under 1 year due to the risk of botulism).

Tips:

  • Honey: Make sure to use raw, unpasteurized honey for the best health benefits.
  • Onion: Red onions are a bit sweeter and milder, while yellow onions are stronger in flavor. Both work well, but use whichever you prefer.
  • Garlic Option: For extra antibacterial benefits, you can add a clove or two of crushed garlic to the layers.

Shelf Life:

  • Store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to one week.

This Homemade Cough Syrup is a simple, natural remedy for calming coughs and soothing sore throats. Honey coats the throat and helps reduce irritation, while onions offer natural decongestant and antibacterial properties.
