  • Bake Time: 18–22 minutes

  • Decorating Time: 40–60 minutes (for the leopard print details)

  • Total Time: ~1.5 to 2 hours (including decorating)

 Difficulty Level

Intermediate – Requires some piping and decorating skills, but step-by-step instructions make it doable!

 Ingredients (Makes 12 cupcakes)

For the Cupcakes:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • ½ cup whole milk

For the Leopard Print Buttercream:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 3–5 tablespoons milk or heavy cream

  • Gel food coloring: tan, dark brown, black, and yellow/gold

 Instructions

 Step 1: Bake the Cupcakes

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners.

  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. In a separate large bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  4. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each.

  5. Mix in vanilla extract.

  6. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined.

  7. Divide batter evenly into cupcake liners (about ⅔ full).

  8. Bake for 18–22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  9. Cool completely before decorating.

 Step 2: Prepare Buttercream

  1. Beat softened butter on medium speed until creamy (about 2 minutes).

  2. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low then high speed until smooth.

  3. Add vanilla extract and 3 tablespoons of milk or cream. Beat until fluffy.

  4. Adjust consistency by adding more milk or powdered sugar if needed.

 Step 3: Color the Buttercream

  1. Divide buttercream into four bowls.

  2. Color each bowl with gel food coloring:

    • Tan (largest portion for base frosting)

    • Dark Brown

    • Black

    • Yellow/Gold

 Step 4: Frost the Cupcakes

  1. Using a piping bag fitted with a large star or round tip, pipe the tan buttercream in swirls onto each cupcake as the base frosting.

  2. For the leopard spots, use smaller piping bags or squeeze bottles filled with dark brown buttercream to pipe irregular shaped spots randomly over the tan base.

  3. Using black buttercream, outline some of the dark brown spots with short curved “C” shapes or half circles around the edges — this creates the classic leopard print outline.

  4. Add small random yellow/gold dots or tiny spots in empty spaces to add color dimension.

  5. Use a toothpick to slightly blur or blend edges for a more natural look if desired.

 Step 5: Final Touches

  • Add edible gold glitter dust or sprinkles for extra glam.

  • Chill the cupcakes briefly to set the buttercream before serving.

 Storage & Shelf Life

  • Store cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.

  • For longer storage, refrigerate up to 5 days but bring to room temperature before serving.

  • Buttercream may harden slightly in the fridge; softens when warmed.

Tips & Tricks for Leopard Print Perfection

  • Use gel food colors — they won’t thin your buttercream.

  • Practice piping spots on parchment paper before decorating cupcakes.

  • Don’t worry about perfect spots — nature is imperfect, and the charm is in varied sizes and shapes!

  • Use a small angled brush dipped in a little milk or clear vanilla extract to gently soften edges of spots for realism.
