Homemade Tortilla Wraps Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil (or melted butter or lard)
  • 3/4 cup warm water

Instructions:

  1. Mix the Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder until well combined.
  2. Add the Fat:
    • Add the vegetable oil (or melted butter/lard) to the flour mixture. Use your hands or a fork to work the fat into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add the Water:
    • Gradually add the warm water to the mixture, stirring until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water, one tablespoon at a time.
  4. Knead the Dough:
    • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 3-4 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Rest the Dough:
    • Divide the dough into 8-10 equal portions (depending on the size of tortillas you want). Roll each portion into a ball and let them rest under a damp cloth for about 15-20 minutes. This allows the dough to relax and makes it easier to roll out.
  6. Roll Out the Tortillas:
    • On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to roll each ball into a thin, round tortilla, about 6-8 inches in diameter. Try to roll them as evenly as possible.
  7. Cook the Tortillas:
    • Heat a dry skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, cook each tortilla for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until bubbles form and the tortilla gets light brown spots. Adjust the heat as necessary to prevent burning.
    • Stack the cooked tortillas under a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft while you cook the rest.
  8. Serve:
    • Serve the tortillas warm or store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or refrigerate for up to a week. You can also freeze them for longer storage.

Cooking Time:

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Rest Time: 20 minutes
  • Cook Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
