 What Is a Dump Cake?

A dump cake is one of the easiest desserts you’ll ever make. It gets its name from the fact that you literally “dump” all the ingredients into a baking dish — no mixing bowls, no fancy steps, and minimal cleanup. It’s a hybrid between a cobbler and a cake, featuring layers of canned fruit, dry cake mix, and melted butter that bakes into a golden, buttery crust over warm, gooey fruit.

This Peach Dump Cake is a beloved version, especially popular in the South, and it’s made with just 3–5 ingredients. It’s the kind of no-fuss dessert that tastes like it took hours but comes together in minutes.

 Ingredients

Basic 3-Ingredient Version:

  • 2 (15 oz) cans peach slices in heavy syrup or juice (do not drain)

  • 1 box yellow or white cake mix (15.25 oz)

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

Optional Additions:

  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon or nutmeg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (added to peaches)

  • ¼ cup brown sugar (for extra caramelization)

  • Chopped pecans or walnuts for crunch

  • Fresh peaches (use ~4 cups if using fresh fruit)

 Equipment

  • 9×13-inch baking dish

  • Spatula or spoon

  • Knife for slicing (if using fresh fruit)

  • Measuring cups/spoons (if customizing)

 Instructions

 Preheat & Prepare

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or nonstick spray.

 Dump the Peaches

  • Pour both cans of peach slices with their syrup/juice into the baking dish.

  • Spread them out evenly with a spoon.

  • If using cinnamon or vanilla, stir them into the peaches now.

 Sprinkle the Cake Mix

  • Evenly sprinkle the entire box of dry cake mix over the peaches.

  • Do not stir or mix — just spread it out gently to cover the fruit.

Pro Tip: Gently tap the dish to level the cake mix without mixing.

 Add the Butter

  • Drizzle melted butter evenly across the top of the cake mix.

  • Try to moisten as much of the surface as possible — this helps it bake into a golden crust.

Optional: Dot with extra cold butter slices if you want crispier topping edges.

 Add Extras (Optional)

  • Sprinkle with cinnamon, brown sugar, or nuts for extra flavor and texture.

 Bake

  • Bake uncovered for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the peach filling is bubbling at the edges.

  • The cake mix will absorb moisture and form a cobbler-like crust.

 Cool & Serve

  • Let the dump cake cool for 10–15 minutes before serving.

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or even a dollop of Greek yogurt.
