Apple fritters

Apple fritters are a delightful treat, especially during the fall when apples are in season. Here’s a simple recipe for making delicious apple fritters:

Ingredients:

For the Batter:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Apple Filling:

  • 2 cups apples, peeled, cored, and finely chopped (use a variety like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

For Frying:

  • Vegetable oil for frying

For Dusting:

  • Powdered sugar

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Apple Filling:

a. In a bowl, toss the chopped apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, and cinnamon. Set aside for about 10-15 minutes to let the flavors meld.

2. Prepare the Batter:

a. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.

b. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, egg, and vanilla extract.

c. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter may be a bit lumpy.

3. Combine Batter and Apple Filling:

a. Gently fold the prepared apple filling into the batter until the apples are evenly distributed.

4. Fry the Apple Fritters:

a. In a deep pan or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

b. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.

c. Fry the fritters for 2-3 minutes per side or until they are golden brown and cooked through.

d. Use a slotted spoon to remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.

5. Dust with Powdered Sugar:

a. Once the fritters are slightly cooled, dust them with powdered sugar.

6. Serve:

a. Serve the apple fritters warm.

Enjoy these delicious apple fritters as a sweet treat for breakfast or dessert. The combination of the soft, cinnamon-spiced interior with the crispy, golden exterior is sure to be a hit!
