Prep Time: 15 minutes
Setting Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes
Recipe Intensity: Easy – Perfect for beginner cooks and a fun activity to do with kids.

Ingredients

For the Base Coating:

  • 1 (12 oz) bag of high-quality white chocolate chips

  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

For the Crunchy Mix:

  • 6 cups Chex cereal (Corn or Rice work best)

  • 2 cups small pretzel twists or sticks

  • 1 cup dry roasted, salted peanuts

  • 1 (12 oz) bag of Christmas M&M’s (or red and green ones)

  • ½ cup holiday sprinkles (optional, for extra festivity)

Equipment:

  • Large, heatproof mixing bowl

  • Medium, microwave-safe bowl (or a saucepan for the stovetop)

  • Rubber spatula

  • Two large baking sheets

  • Parchment paper or wax paper

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Pan and Mix the Dry Ingredients

Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or wax paper. This is a crucial step to prevent the finished munch from sticking and to make cleanup a breeze.

In your large heatproof mixing bowl, combine the 6 cups of Chex cereal, 2 cups of pretzels, and 1 cup of peanuts. Gently toss them together with your hands or a spatula. Be a little careful here—the cereal can break if you’re too rough. You want to maintain a good mix of textures.

Step 2: Melt the Chocolate Coating

This can be done in the microwave or on the stovetop.

Microwave Method: Pour the entire bag of white chocolate chips and the ½ cup of peanut butter into your medium microwave-safe bowl. Heat on high for 1 minute. Remove and stir. Continue heating in 20-second intervals, stirring vigorously each time, until the mixture is completely smooth and melted. Be careful not to overheat, as white chocolate can seize and become grainy.

Stovetop Method: Create a double boiler by placing a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water, ensuring the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water. Add the white chocolate chips and peanut butter to the bowl and stir continuously until melted and smooth.

Once the chocolate and peanut butter are fully melted and combined, stir in the 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Step 3: Combine and Coat

Pour the warm, melted chocolate and peanut butter mixture over the dry cereal, pretzel, and peanut mix in the large bowl. Using a rubber spatula, gently but thoroughly fold and stir until every single piece is evenly coated with the delicious white chocolate glaze. This might take a minute or two—be patient to ensure no dry spots remain.

Step 4: Spread to Set

Immediately divide the mixture between your two prepared baking sheets. Spread it out into an even layer. This allows it to cool and set properly.

Pro-Tip: While the mixture is still slightly wet and sticky, this is the time to add your M&M’s and sprinkles. Scatter them evenly over the top and gently press them in. Adding them now, instead of during the mixing process, ensures they stay distinct and don’t get coated in chocolate, preserving their vibrant color and crunch.

Step 5: Let it Set

Allow the Christmas Munch to set at room temperature for at least 30 minutes. You can place the pans in the refrigerator to speed up the process (about 15 minutes), but room temperature setting helps maintain the best texture for the cereal and pretzels.

Once the chocolate coating is firm and dry to the touch, your munch is ready! Break it apart into clusters with your hands and transfer it to a large serving bowl or an airtight container for storage.

Storage & Gifting

Storage: Store your Christmas Munch in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. It’s best kept in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not refrigerate, as this can cause the pretzels to become stale.

Gifting: This munch makes a wonderful homemade gift! Package it in clear cellophane bags tied with a festive ribbon, or in decorative mason jars. Add a homemade tag for a personal touch that is sure to be appreciated.
