Gumdrop buns

Preparation Details

  • Prep Time: 20 minutes

  • Rise Time: 1 hour 30 minutes (two rises)

  • Bake Time: 15–18 minutes

  • Total Time: About 2 hours 10 minutes

  • Difficulty: Medium

  • Yield: 12 buns

 Ingredients

  • 3¾ cups (480g) all-purpose flour

  • 2¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast

  • ⅓ cup (65g) granulated sugar

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ¾ cup (180 ml) whole milk, warmed (about 110°F / 43°C)

  • ⅓ cup (75g) unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 large eggs, room temperature

  • 1½ cups gumdrops, chopped into smaller pieces

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For brushing:

  • 2 tbsp melted butter (for brushing after baking)

 Instructions

Step 1: Activate the yeast

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk and 1 tablespoon sugar.

  2. Sprinkle yeast over the top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

Step 2: Make the dough

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, remaining sugar, and salt.

  2. Add softened butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and the yeast mixture.

  3. Stir until a soft dough forms.

  4. Knead on a lightly floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic (or use a stand mixer with a dough hook).

Step 3: First rise

  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour or until doubled.

Step 4: Add gumdrops and shape buns

  1. Punch down the dough, sprinkle chopped gumdrops evenly over it, and knead gently just to distribute the gumdrops without crushing them.

  2. Divide dough into 12 equal pieces and shape each into a smooth ball.

  3. Place buns on a parchment-lined baking tray, spaced evenly.

Step 5: Second rise

  1. Cover buns loosely and let rise for 30–40 minutes until puffy.

Step 6: Bake

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Bake buns for 15–18 minutes or until golden brown on top.

  3. Remove from oven and immediately brush with melted butter for a soft, shiny finish.

Step 7: Cool and serve

  1. Let buns cool slightly on a wire rack.

  2. Serve warm or at room temperature.

 Tips

  • Use fresh, soft gumdrops for the best texture. Avoid gumdrops that are hard or overly sticky.

  • Be gentle when kneading in gumdrops — they can melt if overworked.

  • For a festive look, add colored sugar or a light glaze on top after baking.

 Serving Suggestions

  • Perfect with tea or coffee for a sweet snack.

  • Serve with butter, cream cheese, or jam.

  • Great for holiday gatherings or kids’ parties!
