Introduction

This Lazy Man Peach Cobbler (also known as “self-rising peach cobbler” or “dump cobbler”) is the definition of easy Southern comfort food. With no rolling, no dough, and no fancy tools, this recipe gives you golden-brown cobbler with gooey peach filling using just a handful of pantry staples.

It’s the kind of recipe your grandma might’ve scribbled on an index card, passed around at church potlucks, or whipped up on a summer night with fresh peaches and love.

Whether you’re using canned, frozen, or fresh peaches, this cobbler delivers every time—with crispy, buttery edges, soft cake-like topping, and syrupy-sweet peach filling in every bite.

Ingredients

You only need 7 ingredients — that’s it!

  • 1 stick (½ cup) unsalted butter

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • 1 cup milk (whole milk preferred)

  • 1 (29 oz) can sliced peaches in heavy syrup

    • or 2 (15 oz) cans

    • or 4 cups fresh or thawed frozen peaches + ½ cup sugar

 Optional add-ins:

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • ½ tsp cinnamon or nutmeg for warm spice

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar sprinkled on top for caramelized crust

Tools You’ll Need

  • 9×13-inch baking dish or casserole pan

  • Medium mixing bowl

  • Whisk or fork

  • Measuring cups & spoons

  • Oven mitts

  • Ice cream scoop (optional, for serving)

How to Make Lazy Man Peach Cobbler

Step 1: Preheat and Melt Butter

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Place ½ cup butter directly in your baking dish.

  • Put the dish in the oven for 5–7 minutes while it preheats, until butter is melted. Remove from oven.

Don’t let it brown too much—just fully melted and sizzling.

 Step 2: Make the Batter

In a mixing bowl, whisk together:

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

  • ¼ tsp salt

Then stir in:

  • 1 cup milk

  • (Optional) 1 tsp vanilla extract

Mix until smooth. The batter will be slightly thin—this is perfect.

 Step 3: Add Peaches

  • Open your peach can(s) and pour the entire contents (fruit + syrup) over the melted butter.

Using fresh or frozen peaches? Cook them first for 5–10 minutes on the stovetop with ½ cup sugar and ¼ cup water until syrupy.

Step 4: Pour Batter (But Don’t Stir!)

  • Gently pour the batter evenly over the peaches and butter.

Do not stir!
The magic of this recipe is that the batter rises around the peaches as it bakes, forming that iconic cobbler crust.

 Step 5: Bake

  • Bake for 40–50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean from the crust.

Start checking around 40 minutes. The edges should be crispy and caramelized, and the center lightly golden and set.

Step 6: Cool Slightly, Then Serve

Let the cobbler rest for 10 minutes out of the oven. This helps the filling settle and the crust firm up a little.

Serving Suggestions

  • Best served warm, straight from the oven

  • Top with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of heavy cream

  • For a Southern twist, try with buttermilk whipped cream or a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar
