puff pastry with sesame seeds

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15–18 minutes
Total Time: 25–30 minutes
Difficulty Level: Very Easy
Servings: 12–16 twists (or 24–30 bite-sized pieces)

 Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (store-bought, thawed if frozen)

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

  • 1 tablespoon water or milk

  • 2–3 tablespoons white sesame seeds

  • Optional: pinch of salt or spices (e.g., paprika, za’atar, garlic powder)

 Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Puff Pastry

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  3. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface to smooth any creases and slightly enlarge it.

Step 2: Egg Wash & Season

  1. In a small bowl, whisk the egg with 1 tablespoon of water or milk.

  2. Brush a thin layer of egg wash over the surface of the puff pastry. This helps the sesame seeds stick and gives a golden finish.

  3. Sprinkle the entire sheet generously with sesame seeds. Add a pinch of salt or other spices if desired.

Step 3: Cut and Shape

Choose your preferred style:

For Twists:

  1. Cut the pastry into 1-inch wide strips using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.

  2. Twist each strip gently a few times and place on the baking sheet, spacing them 1 inch apart.

For Bites:

  1. Cut the sheet into small squares (approx. 1.5-inch).

  2. Place directly on the baking sheet — no need to twist.

Bonus Tip: For extra crispiness, chill the shaped pastry in the fridge for 10 minutes before baking.

Step 4: Bake

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15–18 minutes, or until puffed up and golden brown.

  • Keep an eye on them — puff pastry can go from perfect to overdone quickly.

Step 5: Cool and Serve

Let the pastries cool for 5 minutes on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature as a light, flaky snack.

 Serving Ideas

  • Serve with dips like hummus, tzatziki, baba ghanoush, or cheese spreads.

  • Use as a crunchy garnish for soups or salads.

  • Pair with charcuterie boards or mezze platters.

  • Add to a breakfast buffet with eggs and fruits.

 Storage Tips

  • Room Temperature: Store cooled pastries in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

  • Reheat: Place in a 300°F (150°C) oven for 5–7 minutes to re-crisp.

  • Freeze: You can freeze unbaked shaped pastries and bake from frozen (add 2–3 minutes to baking time).
