Southern Buttermilk Pie Recipe

Preparation Time: 15 minutes Baking Time: 45-50 minutes Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes Recipe Intensity: Easy

Ingredients:

  • 1 9-inch unbaked pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly
  • 3 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional: powdered sugar or whipped cream for serving

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the unbaked pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish and crimp or flute the edges as desired. Set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar and melted unsalted butter until well combined.
  3. Add the room temperature eggs to the sugar-butter mixture one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Stir in the buttermilk, all-purpose flour, cornmeal, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix until the filling is smooth and evenly combined.
  5. Pour the buttermilk pie filling into the prepared pie crust.
  6. Place the pie dish on a baking sheet to catch any potential spills during baking.
  7. Bake the Southern Buttermilk Pie in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown. The pie may jiggle slightly in the center but should not be liquidy.
  8. Once baked, remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack.
  9. Once cooled, refrigerate the pie for at least 2 hours or until chilled and firm.
  10. Before serving, you can dust the top of the pie with powdered sugar for a decorative touch, or serve slices with a dollop of whipped cream on top.
  11. Slice the Southern Buttermilk Pie and enjoy the creamy, tangy, and sweet flavors.

Note: This pie is best served chilled and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. The combination of buttermilk, sugar, and butter creates a rich and comforting dessert perfect for any occasion. Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less sugar according to your taste preference. Enjoy this classic Southern dessert with its delightful custardy texture and flavor!
