How to Make Amish Hamburger Steak Bake
Step 1: Make the Hamburger Steaks
-
In a large bowl, combine:
-
2 lbs ground beef
-
Egg
-
Breadcrumbs
-
Milk
-
Seasonings (salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika)
-
Worcestershire sauce
-
-
Mix gently (don’t overwork the meat), then divide into 6–8 oval patties, about ¾ inch thick.
Step 2: Brown the Patties
-
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat.
-
Brown each patty for 2–3 minutes per side — just to sear.
-
Remove from pan and transfer to a plate (they will finish cooking in the oven).
Do not cook them fully at this stage — just sear for flavor.
Step 3: Prepare the Gravy
-
In the same pan, add butter and sliced onions.
-
Sauté until soft and golden brown (about 5–7 minutes).
-
Sprinkle in flour, stir, and cook for 1 minute to make a roux.
-
Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
-
Add cream, stir until smooth, and simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
Optional: Add cornstarch slurry if you like an extra thick gravy.
Step 4: Assemble and Bake
-
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Lightly grease a 9×13” baking dish.
-
Arrange browned hamburger patties in the dish.
-
Pour the onion gravy over the top.
-
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake 10–15 more minutes.
Step 5: Serve
-
Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.
-
Serve hot over:
-
Mashed potatoes
-
Egg noodles
-
Rice
-
Buttered bread or biscuits
-
