How to Make Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Step 1: Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, combine:

    • 2 lbs ground beef

    • Egg

    • Breadcrumbs

    • Milk

    • Seasonings (salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika)

    • Worcestershire sauce

  2. Mix gently (don’t overwork the meat), then divide into 6–8 oval patties, about ¾ inch thick.

 Step 2: Brown the Patties

  1. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat.

  2. Brown each patty for 2–3 minutes per side — just to sear.

  3. Remove from pan and transfer to a plate (they will finish cooking in the oven).

Do not cook them fully at this stage — just sear for flavor.

 Step 3: Prepare the Gravy

  1. In the same pan, add butter and sliced onions.

  2. Sauté until soft and golden brown (about 5–7 minutes).

  3. Sprinkle in flour, stir, and cook for 1 minute to make a roux.

  4. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.

  5. Add cream, stir until smooth, and simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.

Optional: Add cornstarch slurry if you like an extra thick gravy.

 Step 4: Assemble and Bake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Lightly grease a 9×13” baking dish.

  3. Arrange browned hamburger patties in the dish.

  4. Pour the onion gravy over the top.

  5. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake 10–15 more minutes.

 Step 5: Serve

  • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley.

  • Serve hot over:

    • Mashed potatoes

    • Egg noodles

    • Rice

    • Buttered bread or biscuits
