Ingredients

  • 1 pound fresh okra, sliced into 1/2-inch pieces
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Okra:
    • Rinse and dry the okra, then slice it into 1/2-inch pieces.
    • Place the sliced okra in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over it. Let it soak for about 10 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Coating:
    • In a separate bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Mix well.
  3. Coat the Okra:
    • Drain the okra from the buttermilk and toss it into the cornmeal mixture. Make sure each piece is well coated.
  4. Fry the Okra:
    • In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
    • Carefully add the coated okra to the hot oil in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
    • Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per batch. Turn occasionally to ensure even cooking.
    • Remove the fried okra with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve the crispy southern fried okra hot as a delicious appetizer or side dish.
