Homemade Alfredo

Description:

Homemade Alfredo sauce is a creamy, cheesy, and rich sauce perfect for pasta, vegetables, or as a dip. Since traditional Alfredo sauce contains dairy, this recipe uses a technique to reduce the risk of spoilage. For long-term storage, the sauce should be frozen rather than canned.

Total Time:

  • Preparation Time: 5 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 10-15 minutes
  • Cooling and Storing Time: 5-10 minutes
  • Total Time: 20-30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

Equipment:

  • Saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Clean jars or containers (for freezing)
  • Ladle

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients:
    • Mince the garlic and grate the Parmesan cheese.
  1. Melt the Butter:
    • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter until it begins to bubble. Be careful not to brown it.
  2. Add Garlic:
    • Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant but not browned.
  3. Stir in the Cream:
    • Pour in the heavy cream and whisk continuously. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, reducing the heat to low.
  4. Add Cheese and Seasonings:
    • Gradually add the grated Parmesan cheese, whisking constantly to melt and incorporate it fully into the sauce. Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using) and continue to whisk until the sauce thickens slightly, about 5-7 minutes.
  1. Cool the Sauce:
    • Remove the sauce from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
  2. Transfer to Jars or Containers:
    • Ladle the cooled Alfredo sauce into clean, freezer-safe jars or containers, leaving at least 1 inch of headspace for expansion during freezing.
  3. Seal and Freeze:
    • Seal the jars tightly with lids and place them in the freezer. Store for up to 3 months.

Storage:

  • Freezing: Store in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to use, thaw the sauce in the refrigerator overnight and reheat gently on the stovetop, whisking to restore the creamy texture.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Use over pasta, vegetables, or as a dipping sauce for breadsticks and garlic bread.

Notes:

  • Thickening: If the sauce separates slightly upon thawing, gently whisk in a little more cream or butter when reheating.
  • Freezer Burn Prevention: For best results, use jars or containers designed for freezing to prevent freezer burn and preserve flavor.

This method ensures you can enjoy the delicious, rich flavor of homemade Alfredo sauce whenever you like, with a safer preservation method!
