Homemade Flour tortillas

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Servings: 12 tortillas

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil or lard
  • 1 cup warm water

Instructions

  1. Combine Dry Ingredients:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Incorporate Fat:
    • Add the vegetable oil or lard to the flour mixture. Use your hands or a pastry cutter to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add Water:
    • Gradually add the warm water to the flour mixture, stirring with a fork or your hands until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the Dough:
    • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 2-3 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Rest the Dough:
    • Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball. Cover the dough balls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rest for at least 15 minutes.
  6. Roll Out Tortillas:
    • On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to roll each dough ball into a thin circle, about 6-8 inches in diameter. Keep the rolled-out tortillas covered with a towel to prevent them from drying out.
  7. Cook the Tortillas:
    • Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place a rolled-out tortilla onto the hot skillet. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until bubbles form on the surface and the bottom has light golden brown spots. Flip and cook the other side for another 1-2 minutes. Adjust the heat as necessary to avoid burning.
  8. Keep Warm:
    • Remove the cooked tortilla from the skillet and place it in a clean kitchen towel to keep warm. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
  9. Serve:
    • Serve the tortillas warm. They can be used for tacos, burritos, quesadillas, or any other dish that calls for flour tortillas.

Enjoy your homemade flour tortillas!
