Introduction

Skip the store-bought chips and enjoy the irresistible crunch of homemade Air Fryer Potato Chips—healthier, fresher, and just as satisfying. These chips are thin, crisp, and seasoned to perfection. Using minimal oil and your air fryer, you’ll get golden chips with far less fat than deep-fried versions. Whether you’re craving a snack, looking for a healthier party treat, or want to impress guests with your DIY skills, these chips deliver every time.

Ingredients

  • 2 large russet potatoes (or Yukon Gold for a buttery flavor)

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • ½ teaspoon sea salt (plus more to taste)

  • Optional seasonings:

    • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

    • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

    • ½ teaspoon chili powder or cayenne (for heat)

    • ½ teaspoon vinegar powder (for salt & vinegar chips)

    • ½ teaspoon onion powder

Preparation Steps

Step 1: Slice the Potatoes

Using a mandoline slicer or very sharp knife, slice the potatoes into very thin rounds—about 1/16 inch (1.5 mm) thick. Thin slices are key for crispy chips.

Tip: Keep the thickness consistent to avoid burning or undercooking some chips.

Step 2: Soak the Slices (Prep Time: 10–15 minutes)

Place the sliced potatoes in a large bowl of cold water and let them soak for 10–15 minutes. This removes excess starch, which helps achieve extra crispiness.

Drain and rinse the potatoes, then pat them completely dry using a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Moisture will prevent them from crisping.

Step 3: Season & Oil

Toss the dried potato slices with olive oil and salt in a large bowl. Add any other seasonings you prefer and coat evenly.

Step 4: Preheat the Air Fryer (if needed)

Preheat the air fryer to 325°F (160°C) for 2–3 minutes. Lower temperature helps chips crisp up slowly without burning.

Step 5: Air Fry in Batches (Cook Time: 15–25 minutes)

Place potato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd—airflow is key to crisping.

Air fry at 325°F (160°C) for 15–25 minutes, flipping or shaking every 5–7 minutes. Thinner slices may finish sooner, so watch closely during the last 5 minutes.

  • Chips are done when they’re golden and curl slightly at the edges.

  • Remove and place on a cooling rack or paper towel to crisp up as they cool.

Repeat with the remaining batches.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve as a standalone snack with your favorite dip: ranch, spicy mayo, hummus, or guacamole.

  • Pair with burgers, wraps, or grilled sandwiches.

  • For a gourmet touch, sprinkle with truffle salt, Parmesan, or fresh rosemary after cooking.

Storage Tips

  • Store cooled chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

  • Re-crisp in the air fryer at 300°F (150°C) for 2–3 minutes if needed.
