For the Tomato Sauce:

  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions:

Prepare the Cabbage Leaves:

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage, then place the whole head in the boiling water.
  3. After a few minutes, carefully peel off the softened leaves. Continue until you have about 12 large leaves.

 Make the Filling:

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, 1 cup tomato sauce, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

 Roll the Cabbage Rolls:

  1. Place a cabbage leaf on a flat surface and cut out the thick center stem.
  2. Spoon a portion of the meat and rice mixture onto the center of the leaf.
  3. Roll the leaf over the filling, folding in the sides as you go. Repeat for all leaves.

 Arrange in a Baking Dish:

  1. In a baking dish, mix together the ingredients for the tomato sauce.
  2. Place the rolled cabbage leaves seam-side down in the dish.

 Bake:

  1. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
  2. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour.
  3. Uncover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the tops are slightly browned.

 Serve:

  1. Spoon some tomato sauce over the cabbage rolls before serving.
