Cabbage Rolls

Ingredients:
For the Cabbage Rolls:
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For the Tomato Sauce:
- 2 cups tomato sauce
- 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions:
Prepare the Cabbage Leaves:
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
- Carefully remove the core from the cabbage, then place the whole head in the boiling water.
- After a few minutes, carefully peel off the softened leaves. Continue until you have about 12 large leaves.
Make the Filling:
- In a bowl, combine ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, 1 cup tomato sauce, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
Roll the Cabbage Rolls:
- Place a cabbage leaf on a flat surface and cut out the thick center stem.
- Spoon a portion of the meat and rice mixture onto the center of the leaf.
- Roll the leaf over the filling, folding in the sides as you go. Repeat for all leaves.
Arrange in a Baking Dish:
- In a baking dish, mix together the ingredients for the tomato sauce.
- Place the rolled cabbage leaves seam-side down in the dish.
Bake:
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour.
- Uncover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the tops are slightly browned.
Serve:
- Spoon some tomato sauce over the cabbage rolls before serving.
