First attempt at Bread n Butter Pudding

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Baking Time: 40-45 minutes

Servings: 6-8

Difficulty Level: Easy

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices of day-old bread, crusts removed
  • Butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup raisins or sultanas
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • Custard or vanilla sauce for serving (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Butter the Bread:
    • Lightly butter each slice of bread on one side.
  3. Arrange Bread Slices:
    • Arrange the buttered bread slices in a baking dish, slightly overlapping.
  4. Add Raisins or Sultanas:
    • Sprinkle raisins or sultanas over the bread slices, ensuring they are distributed evenly.
  5. Prepare Custard Mixture:
    • In a bowl, whisk together eggs, granulated sugar, whole milk, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg until well combined.
  6. Pour Custard Over Bread:
    • Pour the custard mixture evenly over the arranged bread slices. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, ensuring the bread absorbs the custard.
  7. Bake in the Oven:
    • Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  8. Check for Doneness:
    • Insert a knife into the center; if it comes out clean, the pudding is done.
  9. Serve Warm:
    • Allow the bread and butter pudding to cool slightly before serving. It can be served warm or at room temperature.
  10. Optional: Vanilla Sauce or Custard:
    • Serve with vanilla sauce or custard on the side if desired.
  11. Enjoy Your Bread and Butter Pudding!
    • Enjoy the comforting and classic taste of your homemade bread and butter pudding.

Note:

  • Experiment with different types of bread, such as brioche or challah, for a richer flavor.
  • You can add a sprinkle of demerara sugar on top before baking for a crispy crust.
  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra indulgent treat.
