 Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 recommended)

  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 small onion, finely minced

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp garlic powder or 1 clove minced garlic

  • Optional: 1 tsp Dijon mustard

For the Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (white or cremini)

  • 2 tbsp flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • Optional: 1/2 tsp thyme or parsley

 Instructions

 Step 1: Make the Steaks

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine all steak ingredients.

  2. Mix gently with your hands (don’t overwork the meat).

  3. Form into 4 oval patties, about 1/2–3/4 inch thick.

 Step 2: Brown the Patties

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat with a splash of oil.

  2. Sear patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned but not fully cooked.

  3. Remove and set aside on a plate.

 Step 3: Make the Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat.

  2. Add onions and mushrooms, and sauté until softened and golden (about 5–7 minutes).

  3. Sprinkle in flour and stir well for 1–2 minutes to form a roux.

  4. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire, scraping up browned bits.

  5. Bring to a gentle simmer until slightly thickened.

 Step 4: Simmer the Steaks

  1. Return the patties to the pan, nestling them in the gravy.

  2. Cover and simmer on low for 15–20 minutes, or until cooked through (internal temp of 160°F/71°C).

  3. Stir occasionally and spoon gravy over the patties.
