  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 4 slices American cheese (or cheese of your choice)
  • 4 hamburger buns

For the Confidential Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For Assembly:

  • Butter for toasting buns
  • Sliced tomatoes, lettuce, onions (optional)
  • Pickles, for serving (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Confidential Sauce:
    • In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
    • Mix until well combined. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Preheat and Prepare Grill or Skillet:
    • Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Shape and Season Patties:
    • Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions.
    • Shape each portion into a ball, then flatten it into a thin patty (about 1/4 inch thick).
    • Season both sides of each patty generously with salt and black pepper.
  4. Cook the Patties:
    • Place the patties on the preheated grill or skillet.
    • Use a spatula to immediately press down firmly on each patty to smash it thinly.
    • Cook the patties for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until they develop a nice crust and are cooked to your desired doneness.
    • During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
  5. Toast the Buns:
    • While the patties are cooking, spread a bit of butter on the cut sides of the hamburger buns.
    • Place the buns, buttered side down, on the grill or skillet to toast until golden brown and lightly crispy.
  6. Assemble the Burgers:
    • Remove the toasted buns from the grill or skillet.
    • Spread a generous amount of the confidential sauce on the bottom half of each bun.
    • Place a cooked patty with melted cheese on top of the sauce.
    • Add optional toppings like sliced tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and pickles if desired.
    • Cover with the top half of the bun.
  7. Serve:
    • Serve the smashing patty burgers immediately while hot, accompanied by your favorite sides like french fries or onion rings.

Tips:

  • For extra flavor, you can add a dash of hot sauce or a pinch of smoked paprika to the confidential sauce.
  • Don’t overwork the ground beef when shaping the patties to keep them tender and juicy.
  • Adjust the cooking time based on the thickness of your patties and your preferred level of doneness.
