 What Is a Dump Cake?

A dump cake is a popular American dessert where ingredients are “dumped” into a pan and baked—usually starting with canned fruit or pie filling, followed by dry cake mix, and topped with butter. The result? A soft, gooey filling with a golden, crisp topping. It’s like a cobbler and cake had a delicious baby.

This Strawberry Cheesecake Dump Cake elevates the classic with a creamy layer of sweetened cream cheese.

 Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 cans (21 oz each) strawberry pie filling

  • 1 box (15.25 oz) white or yellow cake mix

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

  • Optional: 1 cup fresh strawberries, chopped (for added texture)

For the Cheesecake Layer:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

 Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Lightly grease or butter a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 2: Add the Strawberry Filling

  • Dump both cans of strawberry pie filling into the baking dish.

  • Spread evenly. Add chopped fresh strawberries if using.

Step 3: Prepare the Cheesecake Mixture

  • In a bowl, beat together the cream cheese, sugar, egg, and vanilla until smooth.

  • Spoon or drizzle the cheesecake mixture over the strawberry filling.

Tip: You don’t need to swirl it—just spread or drop it across for creamy pockets in each bite.

Step 4: Add the Cake Mix

  • Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the top of the filling and cheesecake layer. Do not mix.

Step 5: Top with Butter

  • Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the cake mix layer. Try to cover as much of the surface as possible so it bakes evenly.

Optional: Dot the top with a few more pieces of cream cheese or sliced strawberries for extra flavor.

Step 6: Bake

  • Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the edges are bubbly.

Step 7: Cool Slightly & Serve

  • Let the dump cake cool for 15–20 minutes before serving.

  • Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally topped with:

    • Whipped cream

    • Vanilla ice cream

    • More fresh strawberries

    • Powdered sugar

 Serving Suggestions

  • Warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream

  • Chilled = like strawberry cheesecake cobbler

  • Party Style: Spoon into small cups and top with whipped cream and a strawberry for individual servings.

 Storage & Reheating

  • Fridge: Store leftovers covered for up to 4 days.

  • Reheat: Warm in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

  • Freezer: Wrap tightly and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat before serving.
