  • Servings: 4 (8 pizza boat halves)

Ingredients

For the Pizza Boats

  • 2 French bread loaves or Italian bread loaves
  • 1 cup pizza sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Pizza Toppings (Customize as Desired)

  • 20 slices pepperoni
  • ½ cup cooked Italian sausage
  • ½ cup diced bell peppers
  • ¼ cup sliced black olives
  • ¼ cup sliced mushrooms
  • ¼ cup diced onions
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
  • Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Equipment Needed

  • Baking sheet
  • Serrated knife
  • Spoon
  • Mixing bowl
  • Pastry brush
  • Cheese grater
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bread

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Slice each loaf in half lengthwise to create four long pieces. Using a spoon, gently remove some of the soft interior bread, leaving about a ½-inch border around the edges to create a “boat.”

Save the removed bread for homemade breadcrumbs or croutons.

Step 2: Season the Bread

Brush the inside of each bread boat with olive oil.

Sprinkle evenly with:

  • Garlic powder
  • Italian seasoning
  • Oregano
  • Black pepper

Bake the empty bread boats for 5 minutes until slightly crisp.

This step helps prevent soggy bread once the toppings are added.

Step 3: Add the Pizza Sauce

Spread approximately ¼ cup pizza sauce inside each bread boat.

Use the back of a spoon to evenly coat the surface without overfilling.

Step 4: Add Cheese

Sprinkle mozzarella cheese evenly over the pizza sauce.

Top with grated Parmesan cheese for extra flavor and a beautifully browned crust.

Step 5: Add Toppings

Arrange your desired toppings evenly across each pizza boat.

Popular combinations include:

  • Pepperoni
  • Mozzarella
  • Parmesan

Supreme

  • Sausage
  • Bell peppers
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions
  • Olives

Step 6: Bake

Return the pizza boats to the oven.

Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until:

  • Cheese is melted
  • Cheese is bubbling
  • Bread edges are golden brown
  • Toppings are heated through

For a lightly browned cheese topping, broil for an additional 1–2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.

Step 7: Garnish

Remove from the oven.

Top with:

  • Fresh basil
  • Extra Parmesan
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Fresh cracked black pepper

Allow to cool for 2–3 minutes before slicing.

Cut each bread boat into 2–3 pieces for serving.

Tips for Perfect Pizza Boats

  • Toast the bread first to avoid sogginess.
  • Don’t overload with sauce.
  • Use freshly shredded mozzarella for the best melt.
  • Mix different cheeses like provolone or cheddar for richer flavor.
  • Pre-cook raw meats before adding them.
  • Pat vegetables dry to reduce excess moisture.
  • Serve immediately while the cheese is hot and stretchy.
