Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients:

For the Gyro Patties:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 egg

For the Peppers and Onions:

  • 2 bell peppers, thinly sliced (assorted colors)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Assembling Gyros:

  • 4 pita bread or flatbreads
  • Tzatziki sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • Fresh tomatoes, diced
  • Lettuce, shredded
  • Feta cheese, crumbled (optional)

Instructions:

1. Make Gyro Patties:

  • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, oregano, cumin, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, minced garlic, chopped onion, and egg. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated. Form the mixture into oval-shaped patties.

2. Cook Gyro Patties:

  • Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the gyro patties for about 5-7 minutes per side or until they are cooked through and have a nice sear on the outside.

3. Sauté Peppers and Onions:

  • In a separate pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced bell peppers and onions. Sauté until they are softened and slightly caramelized. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Warm Pita Bread:

  • Warm the pita bread or flatbreads according to the package instructions.

5. Assemble Gyros:

  • Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce on each pita. Place a gyro patty on top, followed by the sautéed peppers and onions. Add diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, and crumbled feta cheese if desired.

6. Serve:

  • Fold the pita over the filling, creating a gyro wrap. Secure with toothpicks if needed. Serve the Homemade Hamburger Peppers and Onion Gyros immediately.
